Summary:
Tata Motors and Hyundai are set to clash in India’s growing electric SUV market. Tata has long led the segment with its popular EVs, but Hyundai is ready to challenge with the upcoming Creta EV, launching in January 2025. This article compares Tata’s EV lineup with Hyundai’s Creta EV, examining design, features, and pricing to see which could take the lead in India’s EV landscape.
Tata EV Cars vs Hyundai Creta EV: The Electric SUV World Championship
India’s electric vehicle market is growing at a very fast pace and Tata Motors has already made a good start with the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tiago EV and Tata Tigor EV. However, there are forecasts that the competition will increase as Hyundai plans to release the first electric version of the Creta model no earlier than January 2025. Hyundai arriving with the Creta EV Indian consumers will soon have more variety to look forward to in the fast-growing EV segment.
To determine which vehicle may have an edge in India’s increasingly competitive electric SUV market, we put Tata’s current EV lineup in the face of Hyundai Creta EV.
Tata EV Lineup: Reliable and Affordable
Tata motors has been a significant market in the electric car market in India and has developed different types of EVs. The Tata Nexon EV is currently the most sold electric SUV in the country with a range of 400 km and the car has managed to influence a lot of people to make the switch. Currently, the Tata’s electric cars offers are inexpensive, starting from ₹8 lakh to ₹20 lakh.
Tata’s approach regarding electric vehicles has been based on the provision of reliable electric cars with sufficient range, practical features and a relatively affordable price. For example, Nexon EV is still the most sought after car in the market because of it’s affordable prices compared to its performance. However, Tata Motors’ Tiago EV and Tigor EV are both even more affordable for mass-level entrants.
Hyundai Creta EV: An excellent electric SUV, that is set to be released in 2025.
Hyundai, already has its vision set to make a big entry in the Indian EV space with the Hyundai Creta EV which is planned to be launched by January 2025. Production is to start in December 2024 while it could be launched at the Bharat Mobility Show. The Creta EV will retain the design from the conventional ICE Creta but with some tweaks for EV models like a solid front grille, reprofiled bumpers and aero optimized wheels. The dashboard receives an update too; the color scheme will be changed, control on the center console will be arranged differently, and a three-spoke Ioniq 5 inspired steering wheel.
The battery size of the Hyundai Creta EV is said to be 45kWh, same like the Hyundai Kona EV, which can cover up to 450 km per charge. It will produce 136hp and 255Nm of torque, and the carmaker expects it to compete directly with the Tata Nexon EV. Creta EV would be priced between ₹17 lakh and ₹22 lakh which would place it in the same league as the Tata Curvv EV and the MG ZS EV.

Impact on India’s EV Market
Hyundai is gearing up to launch the Hyundai Creta EV which will pose a serious threat to Tata Motors which currently is a market leader in the Indian EV market. However, Tata still has good options in its stalls, and the new Hyundai Creta EV will be appropriate for those who want to get more luxury with additional options. The Creta EV will come with technologies such as electronic parking brakes, ventilating front seats, an infotainment system measuring 10.25-inches, and ADAS Level 2 which comprises of autonomous emergency brake, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.
Hyundai has a well-earned recognition of a car of high quality and advanced technologies that might appeal to consumers beyond price. On the other hand, Tata has an advantage of early market entrant for EVs and a vast charging network.
Hyundai and Tata are expected to release new models of EVs.
Hyundai also aims at releasing more electric vehicles; second-generation Hyundai Venue EV and Hyundai Inster EV. The Venue EV should go up against the Tata Nexon EV once the latter is launched in 2025 and look compact with a new design both outside and inside. Sub compact electric SUV segment will be new category where Inster EV Hyundai to be launched in 2026 will fall in the same segment as models like Tata Punch EV.
Tata Motors is not sitting idle though: the company is working on the Tata Curvv EV, a concept SUV that should rival Hyundai. The Curvv EV is expected to be the vastly improved model in terms of design and technology aiming at the new generation of consumers.
Conclusion: An overview of the competitive outlook for EVs in India
With competition intensifying in India EV market both Tata Motors and Hyundai appear very well positioned to spearhead India’s electric vehicle revolution. While Tata Motors has already laid the ground with the Tigor and Nexon EVs that are both safe and affordable, the Hyundai Creta EV could be aimed at an altogether different demographic with more features and better technology.
When Hyundai Creta EV will be launched in 2025 and Tata Motor is developing models like the Curvv EV, there will be a healthy competition between these two car makers to deliver more choices with better technology to the car buyers in India.
