Amalia Perez Targets Fifth Paralympic Gold at Paris 2024 in Powerlifting
The stage is set for a thrilling day of Para powerlifting action at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on Friday, 6 September, with four Paralympic champions to be crowned at the La Chapelle Arena. Fans around the globe will be eagerly watching as some of the world’s best powerlifters compete for gold across four events.
The men’s up to 72kg final will be the first bout of the day and all the focus will be on Malaysia’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin. Gustin, the current Paralympic champion, world champion, and world record holder having lifted 231kg at the Dubai 2023 World Championships will be the man to beat in the competition.
The 28-year-old has been an unstoppable force in the sport ever since he clinched his maiden major international title in 2019 World Championships. His reliability and good results make him the favourite to win the tournament for the second time in Paris.
Nonetheless, he is not alone in the field as there are several remains dealers in the market. Egyptian swimmer Mahmoud Attia, a silver medalist in Tokyo 2020, and Italy’s Donato Telesca, a runner-up in the Dubai 2023 World Championships will be eyeing to bring down the Malaysian giant. China’s Cui Jianjin will also be a favorite in this category, especially as she is in search of her maiden Paralympic gold in Paris. Having three top athletes in the running for the event, this could become one of the most spectacular battles of might and finesse.
The evening session starts with the women’s up to 67kg final where Tan Yujiao of China should have it easy. The 24-year-old is the Paralympic and world champion, and the current world record holder in the women’s 79kg category with 141kg lift in Hangzhou Asian Para Games in October this year. She remains confident and in good physique and therefore likely to clinch another gold medal for her in Paris.
The last bout of the day is going to be men’s up to 80kg final that many of them would not want to miss. The one that has been lifted most is 241kg by Iran’s Rostami Roohallah the paralympic and world champion who achieved the feat at the 2021 Bangkok World Cup. Roohallah is ready to win the championship again but he has strong contenders from China in the person of Gu Xiaofei.
Xiaofei has been a constant performer that she has won the silver position at London 2012 and Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. His aim is to win the gold in Paris after coming second for 3 times in a row. This final will be most likely a very close contest between two of the sports most talented athletes.
With powerlifters like Amalia Perez aiming to make history and rising stars like Bonnie Gustin ready to defend their titles, the Para powerlifting competition at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games promises to deliver memorable performances.
