Tata Motors has made a significant entry into the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of the Tata Curvv EV. Unveiled on Wednesday, this new model marks the company’s debut in the sports utility vehicle (SUV) coupe segment, a growing market in India. The Curvv EV brings a host of advanced features, including Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), multiple battery options, and a range of connected car features via Tata’s iRA app. Additionally, Tata Motors has introduced the SUV coupe with petrol and diesel engine variants.
Pricing and Variants
The Tata Curvv EV is priced starting at ₹17.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base Creative variant equipped with a 45kWh battery pack. The top-end variant, Empowered+A, is available at ₹21.99 lakh (ex-showroom). These prices are introductory.
Customers can choose from five trim variants: Creative, Accomplished, Accomplished+S, Empowered+, and Empowered+A. The Curvv EV is available in five distinct color options: Empowered Oxide, Flame Red, Pristine White, Pure Grey, and Virtual Sunrise.
Bookings for the Tata Curvv EV began on August 12, with test drives available from August 14 at Tata Motors showrooms. The first deliveries are scheduled to start on August 23.
Design and Performance
The Tata Curvv EV shares its SUV coupe design with the internal combustion engine (ICE) versions, with only a few distinct elements setting them apart. The vehicle features 18-inch wheels with aero inserts, flush-fitting door handles, and thick body cladding. A continuous LED DRL light graces the front, complemented by lower-positioned LED projector headlamps. The SUV coupe has a ground clearance of 190mm and a water-wading capacity of 450mm. It also offers ample storage with a 500-liter boot and an 11.6-liter frunk (front trunk).
Under the hood, the Tata Curvv EV is powered by a single front-mounted 123kW liquid-cooled motor, delivering 167 PS. This powerful motor enables the Curvv EV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km/h. The EV is available with two battery pack options: 45kWh and 55kWh. The 45kWh battery offers a maximum range of 502 km (ARAI claimed) on a single charge, while the 55kWh battery extends the range to 585 km. However, Tata Motors suggests a real-world range of up to 350 km for the 45kWh option and up to 425 km for the 55kWh option.
The Curvv EV supports fast charging, with the ability to add up to 150 km of range in just 15 minutes using a 70kW DC fast charger. It also includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities.
Features and Technology
The Tata Curvv EV comes loaded with features, especially in the top variants. One of the standout features is its Level 2 ADAS, which offers 20 advanced safety and driver assistance functions. The interior is equipped with a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a JBL-tuned sound system with a 320W subwoofer, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The top trim also includes a voice-enabled panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control with an air purifier, and more.
Other notable features include a powered tailgate with gesture control, automatic headlamps, and cruise control. The Curvv EV integrates Tata’s Arcade.ev experience, offering more than 20 apps for connected driving. Standard across all EV variants are features like six airbags, ESP with Auto Hold, multi-mode regen with paddle shifters, and multi-drive modes (Eco, City, and Sport). The vehicle also includes an Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for pedestrian safety, which activates at speeds below 20 km/h in crowded areas.
Conclusion
The Tata Curvv EV is a strong contender in the growing Indian EV market, offering a blend of style, performance, and advanced technology. With its competitive pricing, robust feature set, and the backing of Tata Motors, the Curvv EV is set to make a significant impact on the Indian automotive landscape.
